Strongbow – Total First Pint Refreshment

12 May 2007 by Silky

There’s a danger when your advert has a single idea or hook (regardless of how good that idea actually is) that it can very quickly become annoying. This has happened with Strongbow‘s Total First Pint Refreshment advert.

Because although at first I thought it was mildly amusing, now whenever it comes on all I hear is the voice in my head screaming:

“AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!”

Judge for yourself.

yep, it could get really annoying.

Why would anyone want to drink a pint that required more lung capacity than anyone remotely normal could possibly possess to consume it safely, and which disables the drinker for most of the evening. Why would you pay for a whole pint, even if you were looking for that effect? All you need is a small sip and the whole night would pass by in a gasping blur. These ads are horrible.

But Beatrice, don’t you some times wish the night would pass by in a gasping blur?

Funnily enough, I’m one of the actors going ‘ahhhhhhhh’ in the new advert, where two blokes are in the trance and the other one does a little routine while he wakes for us to wake up.

It seems to have caught on in the best way, with people able to mimic the action down the pub and in turn, virally spread the brand/concept.

I’d say that’s a good ad but then again, I’m in it.

    Hey Daniel,

Thanks for the comment. How many takes did it take before saying “ahhhhh” got slightly annoying?

Or did you do it in one ;)

It was actually quite a short shoot day and we were all done by 6ish after starting at 8am so not too bad.

It’s not the ‘ahhhhs’ that are the problem, its mastering the correct sip (I jest you not) and also gripping the glass near the bottom!

Thanks for the insight into the art of acting, Daniel.

Did you find yourself holding the glass and sipping your pint in the same way for a few days afterwards too?

Have you avoided drunken idiots ‘ahhhhing’ at you so far?

  • Said on the 15 June 2007

To be honest, I don’t really drink.

However, people do feel free to ahhhh in my face, drunk or not…

  • Said on the 1 July 2007

Does anyone know who the black guy in the first strongbow “ahh” advert is?

  • Said on the 27 July 2007

I was wondering the same thing coz he really looks like my neighbour!

  • Said on the 28 August 2007

What I noticed browsing through you tube is that there are loads of clearly underage kids mimicking the advert – thereby promoting underage drinking.

I’m not hugely bothered about this but I doubt Strongbow are really that happy – or maybe they are?

whos the main actor guy in the advert shown above? hes in another one for some building society too, he looks like my mate

  • Said on the 13 September 2007

Is it your mate? Worth an ask, I’d say.

I’ll have a dig around and see if I can find out for you, Stavros.

  • Said on the 13 September 2007

    Tim Key is his name.

  • Said on the 17 September 2007

    Thanks for the info, Daniel.

We did the campaign. Good to see it being talked about. We only ran it for a couple of years and Strongbow sales increased massively as a result. And as Daniel says lots of people were copying it in pubs across the nation. So maybe not everyone found it annoying. We have moved on to the ‘Bowtime Hard Earned’ campaign now – it would be good to hear what people think of that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWPfzsV_SXA&feature=related And if you haven’t seen it check out the Strongbow Bankers version of the ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDFETK0JQUI&feature=related.

I do hope you intend to pay for that advertising space…..

  • Said on the 18 September 2009

This advert really reminds me of something, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

  • Said on the 18 September 2009

    I think it’s the noise they make…….
