Sony - Foam City
April 17th, 2008Are you one of those poor deluded fools that thinks “TV Advertising” is all about “Advertising” on “TV”?
Don’t you know what century it is, Grandad?
Haven’t you heard of social networking? User-generated content? Not even heard of the internet?
No? People like you make me sick!
In this modern age, it seems that TV advertising is as much about creating an online *buzz* as it is having a good advert. Of course, the pinnacle is creating an online *buzz* and having a great advert, like Cadburys did with their Drumming Gorilla advert - I’m sure I’m not the only one who saw the advert on YouTube before seeing it on the tele box.
And Sony are trying the same with their latest advert for their fancy digital imaging equipment - you know, like cameras and shit.
They’ve been creating an online *buzz* for a few weeks now - helped by the fact some people are keen to see how they’re going to follow up: Balls, Paint and Bunnies.
They’ve done it with rumours being leaked from the film set, flying blogger what blogs about adverts to Miami (not this one though, advert haters, but like the Murphy’s, I’m not bitter), posting sneak previews on YouTube.
Until finally they post this online a good 2 weeks before it’s going to be shown on UK TV:
So, seeing as it’s not as good as the hype (oh yeah, and did I mention I didn’t get a free trip to the States) I think it’s only right that we create a little bit of negative online *buzz* here at TV’s Worst Adverts.
I’ll get the ball rolling, you feel free to jump in whenever:
- Derivative! Shit!
- Self-indulgent! Wankers!
- Messy! Bastards!
I mean, even if the flights were too expensive, they could have at least sent me some stuff, you know, like cameras and shit…

Sony Planning Meeting:
“So, we need ideas for a new Sony ad. Any suggestions?”
“Well the last few times we’ve released loads of….multicoloured stuff on the streets of a city, balls, paint, plasticene rabbits. Why don’t we continue the theme. How about Foam?”
“But loads of people have seen lots of foam in one place at one time, it hardly has the Wow factor does it? Also it’s not *strictly* multicoloured”
“Ahh who cares, let’s just go down the pub”

Not seen so much foam since my plane was involved in an emergency landing at Heathrow.

I think it’s a bit harsh, there are many worse adverts than this around. It’s not brilliant either, mind, and I can’t help but wonder what it actually says about Sony products - our cameras are so good you can photograph foam with them?

Come on, Gina, that’s not the spirit.
We’re trying to generate a negative online buzz!

I’ve revised my last comment, please accept this instead:
What a load of utter bollocks!! It’s the worst advert, in the history of the universe, like, ever!!
(I still haven’t seen it on tv actually, have they taken it off?)

Much better, Gina!
No, it’s not being shown on UK TV until the first week of May.
That’s why this online negative Buzz is going to have such a devastating effect on the boys at Sony

I know for a fact that the bosses of Sony and Saatchi & Saachi executives are avid readers.
I await the first week of May with baited breath!

I just hate the gut-wrenchingly pretentious theme to a lot of adverts these days. I think I preferred it when technology was sold as “By this toy and girls will want to have sex with you”. Here it’s as if you’re supposed to watch the advert and say “Oooh look how they’ve subverted the souless modern cityscape and made everyone remember what fun was like. Look how black and white, young and old, male and female are brought together in one moment of childlike wonder”
Don’t even get me started on that bloody gorilla either, if I hear one more person who fancies themself as an art critic tell me how amazing it is to set themselves free from tradiitional advertising I’m going to void my colon into their mouth.

Don’t hold back now Johnny, if you don’t like the advert, just say so…

Oh frigging hell this is the Fallon at it again. Seriously, they are just taking their client’s money and having the advertising equivalent of a self-indulgent wank.

I think I’d have preferred it if they had released a colossal tide of molten faeces onto the streets of a non-territory specific city. Watching people run away in terror whilst simultaneously trying to film the wave of oncoming filth with their Sony Handycam/Cybershot/whatever would be far more entertaining and may make me buy their products.

Reminds me of the end of Ghostbusters when the giant Stay Puft man explodes

I like this one. I’ve seen it for the first time here and its quite beautiful, but i have a feeling its going to start annoying me when it gets overplayed. Let this be the last one Sony. Its becoming a bit monotonous

Bunch of self-indulgent wankers.
Still not seen it on TV, maybe I spend too much time online?
