Ford Mondeo - Desire
10 July 2007 by SilkyWhat shit lives we all have. We all live in London or the ‘burbs. We eat and drink in miserable, near empty cafes. We work as car park attendants, sat by ourselves for 8 hours a day with just the Daily Mail for company. And worse, our shit world and shit lives have made our children so lethargic that the lie motionless on their beds staring out of the window.
In fact life, the world and, while we’re at it, the Universe are all just so shit that the only thing that we can now *desire* is the new Ford Mondeo.
This is the nihilistic vision that the Ford Motor Company have of the future.
The Ford Mondeo a car so bland that it is like a black hole on wheels, sucking all life into its vacuous centre as it drives by. “Pop!” There goes another set of eyeballs, wrenched from there sockets as an unwitting fool looks at Gordon the accountants new dark grey Mondeo (”It has alloy wheels and a rear spoiler plus a 6 CD auto changer, don’t you know” bores Gordon endlessly).
The only explanation that I can come up for Ford thinking that people will desire this middle-class, middle-management, middle-of-the-road, middle-finger affront to our existence is that Ford’s money problems are far worse than they have let on and they’ve decided that if they’re going down, they’re taking us with them.
What a selfish bunch they are.
Thanks to Lee for submitting this Bad Ad and sending me the link to the video clip. Cheers mate.
Update
I know that quite a few people are keen to know what the music is that Ford use in this here Mondeo advert. Well, I’m reliably informed that it’s a song called “The Artifact And Living” (terrible spelling there, tsk!) by Michael Andrews. As Louise rightly points out below, it’s from the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

I predict that this will become July’s worst ad.
When I first saw this on telly my thought was not “Let’s rush out and buy a Ford”, nor was it “This is an excruciatingly poor ad.” It was “I wonder what Silky’s going to say about this one?”
I need professional help.

Hey Mike. It’s nice to know I’m so near the front of someone’s thoughts.
I normally don’t notice this advert when it’s on because it’s just so mind numbingly dull…
On the plus side, at least it’s an ad that matches the product it’s pimping pretty well though.

Thank you for pointing this out but what the fuck are the balloons for? Apparently, people are using them to throw their cars away. Why? How do you throw away a car with balloons? Is it that their cars are too lightweight or is it that the creatives just through of cars floating with balloons and thought it might be nice to look at, never mind the idea?
the latter, I think.

I think this is a fantastic ad. The music is perfect for it, the 1 minute version is better though because the music takes a bad turn towards the end.
The whole point of the balloons is that everyone who’s seen the new ford mondeo realises that their own cars are just worthless by comparison so they let them go. Casting off their burdens. Sort of like taking lassy out to the woods and then making him run free while you abandon him.

Why, thank you for the explanation of the advert LeadMagnet but don’t you think that desiring a Ford Mondeo is a depressing reflection on the shitness of one’s life?

I think the floating cars would be a better way to get around, especially if everyone’s PROUD of their Mondeo. In fact, I think I’d hang myself on a balloon, just to escape from the people in the advert. Nice music tho, I’d be happy to float to my high altitude death to that tune.

The song is from the soundtrack to Donnie Darko. I’ve seen loads of adverts recently use the score music of Donnie darko for adverts.

Stop looking for an explanation of why balloons are needed to throw a car away.
Balloons are a symbal of celebration.
Its an advert NOT real life. The music represents its simplicity of the car itself and if one finds the music depressing, that is their OPINION.
This advert is all about opinions so whether you go out and buy this car does matter, but its how you look at the advert.
Its all about being creative.
I am 16 and even I can see the creativness of this. Let your minds wonder and stop complaining.

Hey Christine,
Thanks very much for the comment. I’m glad you felt strongly enough to express your opinion about the advert.
Just to clarify for you, this advert is all about selling Ford Mondeos (In my opinion the car is a symbol of all that is shit about life in Britain).
Oh and I recommend always complaining if something is worth complaining about.

Whether you like the car or not, this an ad. I don’t particularly like this car, but I do love this ad. I think Ads are forms of Art and only people with an appreciation for Art will be able to appreciate this ad.
The balloons symbolise freedom (You will have more freedom if you have this car).
The music is perfect for the ad and people with a real ear for music will be able to appreciate it.
Ever wonder how they made it?
I found info about the making of the ad on a page called CREATIVE Review. The people who made this ad had a great deal of CREATIVITY. I think if you checked it out you would find it interesting too. You would see how much work actually goes into making something like that.

OK, apparently balloons are a symbol of freedom or celebration.
“I’m free of my old car because I now have a very boring Ford to drive.”
“I’m celebrating because I’ve bought a very boring Ford to drive.”
Seems like utter, utter bollocks to me. Just like this over rated ad.

i think this advert is brilliant. its a really nice idea and a pleasure to watch. the music goes really well with the imagery and when this advert comes on i cant help but watch because it stands out against a lot of the other, shit, loud in your face ads that are on tv at the moment. saying that ford are trying to make a statement about how boring our lives are and that all we have to desire is their middle of the road car is stupid. its an advert remember the whole point of an advert is to tempt us to buy a product. im not a fan of mondeo’s or ford in general but this is a really clever and Creative advert.

Being a woman and knowing nothing about cars…….I thought the ad was advertising all the cars on the balloons……….until my husband explained……;o/

I thought it was telling us that the new Mondeo was a heavy, lardy old thing when compared to the lightweight cars that came before.
Not a good message for a new car, to be honest.

Thank god for this site.
I’ve seen this advert countless times, and everytime i watch it i recognise the music. I originally thought that the song was “A waltz in the third dimension” from the donnie darko soundtrack ( i bought the album a couple of years ago when i was obsessed with the film), however after recently seeing the advert tonight i googled the advert, came across this site and found out that it was “The Artifact And Livingâ€.
Cheers for the enlightenment. Peace out.

I loved this advert, it is original and creative, and music is great. Ads want to sell things, one has to watch them open minded….

I think this ad is beauty and wonderfuly made. It’s very smooth on moving and transitions and the music perfectly matches the idea.
Beneath the car is good or not, beauty or not, blablabla, all you that give a bad rating to this spot, you are not taking a sidepoint here. Leave the commercial side away, and you will see how beautiful and very well made this ad is.

Hi Edward, thanks for the comment.
A quick question do you think that a Ford Mondeo would make your life measurably better?
That’s the message this advert is selling and (regardless of how well made it maybe) I don’t think that is beautiful I think it’s pretty horrifying.
